Sustainability at Heinzel Pöls

For us, thinking sustainably means acting responsibly and inspiring with quality.
Heinz Schnedl, CTO and Mike Resnicek, CEO/CFO
We focus on renewable raw materials, resource-saving processes, and a responsible value chain. Our products are recyclable and designed to have as little impact on the environment as possible. We are constantly developing the quality and performance of our products and our location, always with the needs of our customers in mind. For us, responsibility also means treating each other fairly, forming reliable partnerships, and setting a clear course for the future.

We take responsibility
As one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality, environmentally friendly kraft pulp and bleached and unbleached kraft paper, we take responsibility—for the environment, our employees, our customers, and society. Through the conscious use of resources, the continuous optimization of our production processes, and our close cooperation with the timber industry, we make an active contribution to sustainable forestry.

We want to be an active part of the solution
Our goal is to further increase eco-efficiency and innovative strength in order to help shape a sustainable future. We are convinced that economic success and environmental protection go hand in hand.
We want to be an active part of the solution—for a sustainable industry, a functioning circular economy, and a livable future.

Value Chain
The Heinzel Group is consolidating its sites into a center for packaging papers and renewable energy.
At the Pöls site, bleached and unbleached long-fiber Orion kraft pulp is produced from certified and/or controlled thinning and sawmill residues, forming the basis for paper production. This pulp is processed on the paper machines PM2 and PM3 in Pöls and on PM6 in Steyrermühl under the brand name Starkraft into brown and white kraft papers — ranging from food packaging papers to kraft papers for special applications.
In Laakirchen, the paper machines PM10 and PM11 produce corrugated base paper under the Starboard brand from recycled paper — a key raw material for cartonboard. The sawmill in Steyrermühl complements the portfolio with certified sawn timber, while production residues and biogenic fuels are used for energy in the in-house fluidized bed boiler.
Surplus heat and electricity from production are also supplied to nearby communities as district heating and power. In this way, raw materials are used efficiently and the paper cycle is largely closed.
